Mtume was an American musician and bandleader working across post-bop, spiritual jazz, quiet storm, and 1980s to 1990s R&B, with a pan-African identity in his sound. He founded the eponymous Mtume band in the 1970s and later became a key figure through the group’s “Juicy Fruit,” influential for its sampling in hip-hop.
